Cullen Performance Hall runs graduations with high degree of professionalism

The application of a fresh coat of black paint on the stage at Cullen Performance Hall — a task the venue takes on before it hosts spring and fall graduations — was a sign that commencement ceremonies were less than a week away.

Spring’s graduation schedule had the hall slated for holding the events for nine colleges during May 8-10, dividing the total number of commencements almost evenly between the Fertitta Center. This required the team to organize ceremonies for the morning, afternoon, and evening on each of the three days

“We are grateful to be a part of a huge celebration to honor these UH graduates,” said Brandon Ferkel, theater director, Cullen Performance Hall. “We strive to provide the best experience possible to both the graduates and their families.”

Graduation ceremonies at Cullen Performance Hall are meticulously prepared with backstage teams arranging stage setups, lighting, and ADA-compliant ramps, while front-of-house staff ensure security, organize concessions, and assist guests with tickets and seating. Each ceremony includes a procession, national anthem, and color guard, lasting 1–1.5 hours, with AV students managing technology and live captioning.

Ferkel is proud of the dedication and professionalism of the teams. “They are the unsung heroes, making each event memorable and safe for all.”
