May marks National Police Week, a time to honor law enforcement officers and recognize the vital role they play in their communities. At the University of Houston, this provides a time for the community to recognize the vital role of the University of Houston Police Department (UHPD).
UHPD’s Role on Campus
UHPD is the primary law enforcement agency for UH sites, with jurisdiction across at UH-Victoria, UH at Sugar Land, and UH at Katy. UHPD officers are certified Texas peace officers, committed to safety, professionalism, and community engagement.
“We strive to be the best police agency possible,” said UHPD Chief Ceaser Moore. “Community feedback is essential to improving our services.”
UHPD is accredited by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), placing it among the top 10% of campus police agencies nationwide.
Community Services
UHPD offers several services to enhance campus safety:
- Safe Trade Location: Buy/sell items safely at UHPD HQ (4051 Wheeler Ave).
- Security Escorts: Call or text (713) 743-3333 for a safe walk on campus.
- Emergency Callboxes: Red boxes with blue lights connect directly to dispatch.

Events & Training
UHPD hosts events to build community ties:
- Coffee With a Cop: Monthly meet-and-greet with free coffee and pastries.
- Walk in the Dark: Identifies poorly lit areas on campus.
- Cougar Walk and Roll: Focuses on campus accessibility.
- National Night Out: A fun, interactive evening with games and activities.
- Behind the Badge: Meet UHPD officers and learn about campus safety.
They also offer CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) training, teaching the “Avoid, Deny, Defend” strategy.
“Through these events, we build relationships and ensure our community knows their police department,” said Assistant Chief Ryan Erwin.
