Dr. Summer Harlow, Ph.D., continues to secure recognition for her research exploring the intersections of technology, international journalism, and activism in Latin America and marginalized communities.

An assistant professor at the Valenti School of Communication, Dr. Harlow will be honored with the 2018 Outstanding Junior Woman Scholar Award from the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communications at the 2018 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Conference in Washington, D.C. The award will be presented to her on Sunday, August 5, 2018.

Dr. Harlow is the fifth recipient of the Junior Woman Scholar Award, which is accompanied by a $250 check and certificate. According to a press release from the Kopenhaver Center, this award “honors a woman junior scholar who demonstrates outstanding research and great potential for future scholarship.”

“Dr. Harlow represents the best of the academy in the remarkable research agenda she has pursued and the accomplishments she has achieved. This award is designed to encourage and honor young women like Dr. Harlow who have published outstanding research and hold great potential for future scholarship,” remarked Kopenhaver in the press release.

Earlier this year, Dr. Harlow was selected for the coveted AEJMC Emerging Scholars grant, which recognizes promising scholars by funding research or teaching projects. Through funding from this grant, Dr. Harlow’s current research focuses on how Texas media outlets cover social protests.

In addition to conducting research, Dr. Harlow is a freelance journalist and press freedom analyst for Freedom House.
