Judge Steven Kirkland has 12 years of judicial experience, 26 years of legal experience and over thirty years of community service to the people of Houston and Harris County. Judge Steven Kirkland served as Judge in the 215th Civil District Court of Harris County from 2009 to 2012 and in Houston Municipal Courts from 2001 through 2008.  Prior to taking the bench he represented international oil companies and individual homeowners. Judge Kirkland is currently working in the Houston City Attorney’s office assisting with economic development projects. He is a candidate for the 334th District Court in the 2016 general election.

Judge Kirkland came to Houston from West Texas in order to attend Rice University.  After graduating from Rice with a history degree in 1982, he worked as a paralegal at Texaco in order to put himself through the University of Houston Law School.  

Judge Kirkland is active in promoting recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, affordable housing, historic preservation, and LGBT rights.  His affordable housing projects have been recognized with awards by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and he was awarded the 2006 Government Friend of the Homeless by Coalition for the Homeless of Houston and Harris County.
