Alumni Spotlight: Julie Diaz, Director of Parks & Cultural Services for Galveston County
Director Diaz is a 2002 graduate of Mississippi State University where she was involved in the National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA). At the University of Houston, Diaz served as the Facilities Graduate Assistant for the Campus Recreation Department while earning her master’s degree in 2004. Her initial professional employment was in the City of Pearland Parks and Recreation Department. She spent over seven years in this capacity before taking the Assistant Director position at Galveston County in 2012 and was promoted to Director in 2014.
Director Diaz is responsible for 14 parks, 10 boat ramps, 25 miles of beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, 3 senior centers (and a large grant that assists the County in feeding them), the County Museum, and numerous rentals facilities.
Speaking about her experience at UH, Diaz said, "My time and experiences at U of H greatly prepared me for my future jobs as I have been involved with the construction of recreation centers and the development of numerous policies and procedures for the different areas I supervise."
