Driven By Impact: University Research Priority Areas

Supporting research, collaboration, and innovation to solve global challenges.

By Tim Holt

The Division of Research has partnered with leadership at the University of Houston to establish research priority areas to highlight the University's strengths and opportunities for strategic growth. These priority areas build upon UH's previous research thrusts to respond to current and future challenges.

The University will strategically support research in the areas of:

  • Energy, Security and Sustainability
  • Health and Well-being
  • Advanced Materials and Manufacturing
  • Aerospace and Earth and Planetary Sciences
  • Digital Futures and Human Experience
  • Education, Civic Engagement, and Workforce Development

Developed with extensive faculty input and external benchmarking, these areas reflect UH’s strengths in energy, health, materials science, and manufacturing as well as its commitment to education and workforce development across disciplines.

The University Research Priorities will help guide investments in research infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaborations, faculty recruitment, and internal funding. Intended to strengthen targeted areas of opportunity, the framework also remains inclusive of the full range of scholarly activity across campus.

“Distinguishing these priority areas allows UH to make thoughtful investments while supporting the full breadth of research across our campus,” said Claudia Neuhauser, Vice President for Research.
