Archives
Primary sources like documents, newspaper articles, diaries, photographs, images, and oral histories are the building blocks of historical research. The rich archival collections housed in the Special Collections at M.D. Anderson Library have been crucial in our efforts to uncover the untold stories at the heart of “100 Years of Stories.” Our researchers have worked closely with librarians to discover the treasures to be found in the Library’s vast collections.
The University of Houston Archives contains materials that document the university’s administrative and organizational history, as well as student life on campus since 1927.
Carey Shuart, who generously sponsored “100 Years of Stories,” is the founder of The Carey Shuart Women’s Research Collection. This collection documents the important history of Texas women and has also allowed us to tell the stories of some of UH’s notable women.
Created in partnership between the Center for Public History and M.D. Anderson Library, The Houston History Archives and the UH Oral History of Houston contain important records detailing the history of our city and region, including many first-person interviews with notable and everyday Houstonians. These materials help us place the history of UH in the larger context of the city and region. Additionally, students and researchers are creating new oral histories as part of the “100 Years of Stories” and adding to the archive and our knowledge about UH and Houston’s history.
