  UH Alum Jericho Brown wins MacArthur/Genius Grant

  Today, the MacArthur foundation announced the winners of the 2024 MacArthur Genius grants.  Among them was poet and UH Creative Writing Program alum Jericho Brown.  Jericho Brown has also recently received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his book The Tradition.

  Chitra Divakaruni wins American Book Award for her new novel Independence

  The American Book Award honors books for “outstanding literary achievement” and is administered by the multi-cultural focused nonprofit Before Columbus Foundation.

  Kevin Prufer wins the Rilke Prize for his new book of poems The Fears

  The Rilke Prize honors outstanding work by a mid-career poet and comes with a $10,000 prize.   The Fears was selected from a pool of over 200 books submitted by publishers from across the country.

  UH Poetry Faculty Member Kevin Prufer publishes new novel

  Proving crossover is possible, Kevin Prufer, normally a poetry writing professor in the CWP, has a new novel out.  Sleepaway appears this summer from Acre Books.

  UH Creative Writing Professor Roberto Tejada has new book forthcoming

  Poet Roberto Tejada’s new book, Carbonate of Copper, will be published early in 2025 by Fordham Univeresity Press.

  UH Poetry alum Weijia Pan wins Max Ritvo Prize and Stegner Fellowship

  Weijia is cleaning up this year.  His award-winning poetry collection, selected by Louise Glück, is called Motherlands and is out now from Milkweed Editions.

  UH PhD student Adele Elise Williams’ manuscript selected for the 2024 Miller Williams Poetry Series

  The poetry collection, called Wager, was selected by NAACP Image Award-winner Patricia Smith and is just out from the University of Arkansas Press.

  UH PhD student Kelan Nee wins Vassar Miller Prize for poetry

  His poetry collection, Felling, was selected by Gregory Fraser and is now available from the University of North Texas Press.

  UH PhD student Anthony Sutton edits new book for The Unsung Masters Series

  Anthony Sutton and University of Cincinnati scholar Michael Peterson have edited the volume on African American avant garde poet Tom Postell.  The book is available now.  And check on Anthony’s new book of poetry, too.  It’s called Particles of a Stranger Light

  Undergraduate Kalena Holeman Reimagines Dantean Katabasis at Harvard University

  It’s the rare undergraduate who has already experienced presenting their original research at an academic conference. Now imagine you’re a sophomore bringing a new, Black Studies-meets-Deep Time lens to literary studies and Harvard University comes knocking. Even amid the immense field of talent in Roy Cullen, only one undergraduate currently fits this bill: Kalena Holeman.

  The English M.A., Reimagined

  In 2021, the English Department launched a revamped, nationally competitive online M.A. program. Dr. Lynn Voskuil spearheaded the effort to fully redesign our Master’s in English to be relevant to the social, political, and environmental challenges of the 21st century and to accommodate professionals who work full- or part-time. Interactive, asynchronous courses are offered online, and face-to-face courses are offered during evening hours with the goal of eventually providing the option of a fully online M.A.

  Francine J. Harris Receives 2020 National Book Critics Circle Poetry Award

  The University of Houston College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) and the Department of English are pleased to announce that Associate Professor of English Francine J. Harris is the winner of the 2020 National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) Award for poetry. She received this honor for her most recent work, “Here is the Sweet Hand” (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2020).

  UH Poet Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship

  Joy Priest is a first-year doctoral student in the UH Creative Writing program in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She has been awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts which will allow her to set aside time for writing, research and travel.
