Things to Consider Before Renting an Apartment

Rent costs vary based on the area of Houston you are in. Living with a roommate can help reduce costs. Consider these factors:

  • transportation
    • public transportation: make sure there is a bus or train stop nearby before you rent an apartment
    • personal car: check commute times and UH Parking permit availability before you rent an apartment
    • rideshare: commute with classmates/friends; students will learn more about Houston rideshare opportunities at New Student Orientation
  • deposit
  • electricity, gas, water, and trash: $100-$200 per month
  • Internet
  • renter’s insurance

Rent Glossary

  • Deposit

A deposit is money that you must pay before you can rent an apartment. You may request this money back when you move out. Before you sign the leasing agreement, talk to the leasing office about the terms and conditions of receiving a refund of the deposit.

  • Lease

A lease is a contract outlining the terms under which you, the tenant, agree to rent property owned by the property owner or landlord. Read the lease carefully and make sure you understand the lease before you sign it.
