Hispanics/Latinos Underrepresented in Alzheimer’s Disease Research

A University of Houston researcher is working to increase health literacy among Hispanics/Latinos (H/Ls) when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The largest ethnic minority in the U.S., at 18% of the population, H/Ls are 50% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than non-Hispanic whites. H/Ls also live longer, develop AD symptoms earlier, are diagnosed at later stages and are less likely to be treated.

Study: Inequality Between Men and Women Dramatic In Houston-Area

A new study by the University of Houston Institute for Research on Women, Gender & Sexuality (IRWGS) reports that women lag far behind men on multiple fronts in Harris County. Women are almost 50% more likely to live in poverty than men and the wage gap for men and women by race and ethnicity is considerably greater here than nationally.

Hispanic Studies doctoral students receive national acclaim

The UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) and the Department of Hispanic Studies are pleased to announce the accomplishments of three doctoral students studying Spanish with concentrations in creative writing, each of whom has demonstrated that wonders can happen when natural creative ability is sharpened with a rigorous education in the literary arts.

Visiting Scholar Brings Expertise on Brazilian Literature, Film, and Culture

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to welcome Visiting Distinguished International Scholar Maria Aparecida Andrade Salgueiro to the World Cultures and Literatures (WCL) program for the Spring 2020 semester. A native of Brazil, Salgueiro holds the rank of a full professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and brings over 30 years of experience in scholarship and pedagogy to her role in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. Salgueiro’s research interests include intercultural exchange, Afro-Brazilian literature, gender studies, and contemporary Brazilian film.
