CLASS Modern and Classical Languages students author essays in UH Libraries open textbook

Melody Yunzi Li, assistant professor of Chinese in the UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, collaborated with open educational resources (OER) librarians Katherine Carter and Ariana Santiago to create the first OER student-authored publication by UH Libraries. The final project of five classes, the digital textbook encompasses the written work of students enrolled in “Tales of East Asian Cities” this past fall. 

 

Biography by African American Studies Department chair reaches PROSE Award finals

Tara T. Green, CLASS Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of African American Studies, has been named a finalist in the Association of American Publishers (AAP) 47th Annual PROSE Awards. Evaluated by a 25-judge panel, her 2022 book “Love, Activism, and the Respectable Life of Alice Dunbar-Nelson” held its weight against other humanities projects from around the nation.

New UH agreement with Kyiv School of Economics builds on 20 years of partnership

In the early 2000s, economics scholar Paul Gregory lay the groundwork for what would become a decade-long partnership with the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE). This year, the partnership will celebrate another major milestone: the launch of a Bachelor of Science in Economics.

Seven CLASS students earn prestigious Fulbright Scholarships

Seven students from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) have been recognized with Fulbright Scholarships in the 2022-23 academic cycle. University of Houston was regaled as a top Fulbright producing institution, with 70% of the awardees seeking an enhanced educational experience abroad hailed from CLASS.

Global Communication Summit on Anti-Asian Racism

The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication and the Asian American Studies Center at the University of Houston are bringing together researchers, educators, students, journalists and activists for the 5th annual Global Communication Summit. This year’s summit, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Valenti School of Communication, will focus on anti-Asian racism in everyday communication. The hybrid in-person and virtual event is free and open to the public.

Quinn receives second major humanities award in less than a year

Rachel Quinn has received a $60,000 faculty award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), her second nationally competitive accolade in less than a year. The funds will support research for Quinn’s forthcoming black feminist biography about Philippa Duke Schuyler (1931–1967), a mixed-race pianist, writer and Goodwill-Ambassador who was also the daughter of conservative Harlem Renaissance journalist George Schuyler.

UH Report Finds Houston-Area Intimate Partner Violence Homicides Doubled in Three Years

A new study of domestic violence in the Houston region by the University of Houston’s Institute for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality found intimate partner violence homicides doubled in three years and calls to shelters rose past pre-pandemic levels. To turn the tide, the study authors recommend significant community investment in expanded domestic violence infrastructure coordination and staffing.
