Ombudsperson Information

The UH Graduate School has an Ombudsperson for Graduate and Professional Students. The Ombudsperson provides a safe setting for graduate and professional students to confidentially raise and discuss their concerns about workplace and academic issues, address interpersonal difficulties, and receive assistance in identifying options for resolving the conflicts and concerns.

What an Ombudsperson Does

  • Provides a confidential forum for raising issues and expressing concerns.
  • Listens without judgement and offers impartial feedback.
  • Assists the graduate/professional student in exploring options to address concerns.
  • Identifies and refers the graduate/professional student to resources for addressing problems and concerns.
  • Clarifies policies and procedures that apply to the graduate/professional student’s problem or issue.
  • Provides coaching on effective communication for difficult conversations.
  • Analyzes and reports trends in complaints and concerns, and provides recommendations for institutional improvements.
  • Promotes highest standards of university governance and a supportive, ethical and healthy organizational culture.

UH Ombudsperson - Funda Suhin, Ph.D.
Dr. Suhin is an associate professor of supply chain management. Her teaching and research interests are in operations and supply chain management. She is passionate about the UH community and student well-being. Over her career, she has worked with graduate students in a wide variety of roles, including teaching graduate courses, directing graduate student research, and coordinating a doctoral program in Bauer College of Business. She has served on numerous committees related to graduate student education and policies, and as a graduate student mentor.

Events

As part of this now-traditional break between lectures and finals for the Spring semester, we will have two sets of special guests. First, the Graduate Ombudsperson, Funda Sahin, will be attending to discuss conflict resolution. Second, Arbaz Ali and Vinny Gonzales from CAPS will visit to provide some stress relief exercises and discuss stress management with anyone who is interested. Please plan on stopping by and grabbing some food and socializing with other graduate students or our special guests. Dr. Jeremy May will also be in attendance, and he will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.

No RSVP is needed. Please just stop on by!

The Postdoc Offices at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Methodist, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, and UTHealth Houston invite PhD students to attend Postdoc Houston. Postdoc Houston is a free virtual event for prospective postdoctoral scholars on May 15, 2025, from 1 to 4 PM Central Time.

The Office of Faculty Engagement and Development and the UH Postdoctoral Fellow Association will host the 3rd Postdoctoral Research Symposium on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 8:30 AM – 4:15 PM on the UH Central campus. This symposium will showcase transformative scholarly research from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across disciplines at the University. The symposium will include a keynote speaker, poster, and oral presentations. The symposium will conclude with a catered reception and award ceremony. Postdocs, faculty, and staff from all campuses are invited to attend.

The international science festival, Pint of Science, will take place May 19–21 in more than 500 cities across 27 countries, bringing scientific research to the public in relaxed, local settings.

In 2025, the U.S. expansion includes 16 cities, including Houston. The local event will be hosted at True Anomaly Brewing Co., with doors opening at 6:30 PM and presentations running from 7 to 9 PM

All speakers featured in Houston’s program are affiliated with the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, including current faculty and alumni.

The LS-PAC MODELS Center announced the 2024 Building Future Faculty in STEM Program to be held July 14-17 at Baton Rouge Marriott in Baton Rouge, LA. The Building Future Faculty in STEM Program is open to doctoral students in their last two years of study and postdoctoral scholars.

Attendees will gain an understanding of how to navigate the academic job market, the importance of mentorship, how to balance expectations, and how to thrive as an early career faculty member. Emphasis is placed on providing mentoring, professional development, and networking opportunities in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. These groups include African-American/Black, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, or Hispanic/Latinx.

All expenses (lodging, transportation, and meals) are covered for accepted participants.

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Interest in an academic career in STEM
  • Ph.D. student (anticipated graduation by 2026) or postdoctoral scholar

Internships/Fellowships

NASA Office of STEM Engagement internships leverage NASA’s unique missions and programs to enhance and increase the capability, diversity and size of the nation’s future STEM workforce. Internships are available at multiple NASA Centers and provide students with the opportunity to participate in either research or other experiential learning, under the guidance of a mentor at NASA.

Applicants for this internship must be U.S. Citizens and meet a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement.

The University of Houston (UH) Chevron Energy Graduate Fellows Award seeks outstanding graduate candidates at the University of Houston (UH) engaged in graduate education and research in energy topics from across the campus. The program will fund 8 (eight) fellows with a one-year $12,000 graduate fellowship in addition to any other remuneration students might be receiving. Students must have a minimum of 12 months before completion of their degree program, with preference for students who have longer horizons before completion of their degree program. Students enrolled for less than six months in their graduate program (as of May 15, 2025) are not eligible to apply.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Graduate students from any school or college at UH with a focus on energy study and/or research.
  • Students must have been enrolled for longer than six months in their graduate program as of May 15, 2025.
  • Students must have a minimum of 12 months of coursework and /or research remaining prior to completion of their degree program.
  • Students must be in good academic standing in their graduate program.
