External Funding Opportunities for CLASS Graduate Students
In addition to the internal funding opportunities available to CLASS students, there are scholarships, grants and fellowships funded by external organizations. These can be to support your research here at UH and abroad, to fund you as you complete your dissertation, and / or to undertake research within the United States. Here are some specific scholarships that may be of particular interest to graduate students within CLASS. Several of our recent graduate students have been awarded these scholarships and you can read about their success here.
Mellon / ACLS Dissertation Completion Scholarship
Stipend: $35,000, plus funds for research costs of up to $3,000 and for university fees of up to $5,000. Tenure: one year beginning in the summer. Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS online fellowship administration system (ofa.acls.org) in late October. Notifications will be sent via email in March:

Ford Foundation Fellowships
Through its program of fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships are awarded in a national competition. Applications due in December. Notifications in March:

National Institutes of Health F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award
The purpose of this program is to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce. The proposed mentored research training is expected to clearly enhance the individual's potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist. Library of Congress Kluge Fellowship
The Kluge Center encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research is particularly welcome in the Kluge Fellowship program. The fellowship is open to scholars in the humanities and social sciences with special consideration given to those whose projects demonstrate relevance to contemporary challenges. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. The five-year fellowship includes three years of financial support including an annual stipend of $34,000 and a cost of education allowance of $12,000 to the institution. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Post-graduate study at Cambridge University in all fields. Applicants must show evidence of commitment to improving the lives of others. Deadline: September and October:
